"Little congratulator" - portrait of a boy from a highly aristocratic family, holding a bunch of field flowers intended as a present (congratulation) for his mother. The latter obviously was the one to order this wonderful portrait. This miniature (executed, according to child's dress, in the 1810s) is illustrated in well-known book "Miniaturen und Silhouetten" by Max von Boehn (München, 1919 page 106 - see our image nr.9), but with (as we stroingly belive erroneous!) title: "French School, Napoleon as a boy". Max von Boehn suggests, that the sitter is in reality not Napoleon Bonaparte, but either his son, Duke of Reichstadt or his nephew, son of Louis Bonaparte, Charles Louis Napoleon (1808-1873; future Emperor Napoleon III).
Our opinion: neither former, nor latter. In this visual age (4- 5 years) Duke of Reichstadt (1811-1832) was already in Vienna. Also children portraits of Napoleon III show absolutely another boy...
Moreover this miniature demonstrates stylistic critera of works of famous English portrait miniaturist Richard Cosway and it was made either by latter himself or by one of 1st-class, contemporary English miniaturists working in his manner.

Richard Cosway was born in 1742 in Oakford near Bampton, Devon. The family was of Flemish descent and owned a considerable amount of property. Richard was attracted to art from early age on and copied many of the family pictures. The boy was sent to London before he turned twelve to study there under Thomas Hudson and at the Shipley's drawing school. He was awarded prizes at the Society of Arts in 1755-60 and began exhibiting in 1760. In 1769 he entered the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited at the R.A. in 1770-1806. In 1770 Cosway became an associate and in 1771 member of the Academy (RA after name). As a fashionable miniaturist he obtained in 1796 the coveted honour of being made Miniature Painter to the Prince of Wales, with whom he was in friendly terms. When the Prince became Regent in 1811, he was more selective of his immediate circle and Cosway was dropped and never regained his position. After two strokes in ca.1821, he was partially paralyzed and on the 4th July 1821 after another attack whilst out for a drive, he died before getting back home.
Cosway (as Daphne Foskett says) is probably one of the best known miniaturists of the British School. Works by him can be found in many important collections including those of H.M.the Queen, collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Wallace collection, Fitzwilliam Museum, etc.
