This drawing (probably a preparatory study for a book illustration) is titled on verso: "Infanterie francaise poursuivant les Autrichiens sur le bord de la Bormida". This writing implies that we are dealing with one of the episodes from the famous Napoleonic Battle of Marengo, which took place on June 14, 1800 (CLICK HERE). This event occurred to the east of Alessandria (Piedmont), on a plain crossed by a river forming meanders, the Bormida, over which the Austrians installed a bridgehead.
Nicolas Toussaint Charlet (1792 Paris - 1845 Paris) was a very well-known French artist and son of a Napelonic veteran. He studied at the atelier of Gros and a couple of years later brought out his first lithographs, with which he soon gained popularity. In 1839 Charlet became a drawing teacher at the "Ecole Polytechnique". Along with Raffet and Domier he belonged to the best French lithograph artists of the first half of the 19th century.
