Offered here is a wonderful oil on canvas painting made by one of Vienna's leading flower artists of the Biedermeier period, Franz Xaver Gruber. It is a still-life with a blooming thistle (in German - "Diestel") and a bird flying next to it, juxtaposed with alpine landscape in the background. This work is also one of Gruber's several versions of the same subject, which he produced following the great success of his somewhat larger (similar) 1855 painting (see our image nr.14). The latter painting was in the same (1855) year shown at the exhibition of the Milan Academy of Fine Art and, few months later, at the 1855 World Exhibition in Paris. The artist was referred to as "Diestelgruber" among the Viennese (English: "Thistle-Gruber").

Franz Xaver Gruber (1801 Vienna - 1862 Vienna) was one of the best Austrian flower painters of the early 19th century. From 1817 he studied at the Vienna Academy and in 1830 the artist received a very significant award - the Fueger Gold Medal. Mainly flower and still life painter, Gruber was also known for his masterful landscapes. From 1835 he was Professor of the same Academy, in 1839 joined the Academy of Milan, in 1839-59 created a collection of flower watercolours consisting of 120 works for the State Councellor Prince Metternich, and in 1841-49 created a similar collection for Kaiser Ferdinand. Many works by the artist are displayed in Austrian and international museums and private collections.

For extensive biographical material concerning the artist, as well as his other works, see our images nr.12-17.

Although unsigned, this painting is an absolutely authentic work of Franz Xaver Gruber, dating to the second part of the 1850s. We will provide the buyer with a certificate of authenticity (COA) - a valid legal document (virtually a "money-back" or satisfaction guarantee).

Provenance: Collection Dr. Wilhelm Danhofer (1914-1991), Graz / Austria (see the estate label on the stretcher; see also our image nr.18).
