Although unsigned, this superior quality miniature portrait of ca. 65 year old King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria (CLICK HERE) is an absolutely typical (for comparison, see our images nr.6-12) and very important work of one of Bavaria's best mniaturists, Josef Heigel.

Josef Heigel (1780 Munich - 1837 Paris) was born into a Munich based family of actors - his father was the actor of court theatre Josef Franz Heigel (1752-1811), all his brothers were actors, too.
In 1795 he came to Paris where he became a pupil of famous miniaturist Jean-Baptiste Isabey. From 1797-1806 he studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. In that period he spent a lot of time copying historical paintings and portraits in "Hofgarten Galerie" (Royal Garden Gallery, Munich). From 1806 to 1819 he lived in Paris where he visited Isabey's studio again. In 1819 he returned to his hometown Munich, where he became court miniaturist. Between 1819 and 1828 he made several trips in Germany and visited Paris again. In 1828, via Berlin, Frankfurt a. Main and Darmstadt, he went to Paris where he remained until his death in 1837.
