We bought this miniature in June 2009 from a private American collection. It is an oil portrait of a Russian gentleman in civil uniform wearing a neck cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of 3rd class and neck cross of Order of St.Anna of 2nd class with diamonds. Old Cyrillic inscription on verso (clearly written by the miniature's previous owner in 1869) says: "1869 //Protasov /Bakhmet'ev".
A few years long due to wrong "attribution" provided iby Moscow uniformologist Dimitry Gorchkof (we don't collaborate wih him more!) this portrait was thought to be that of retiered general Nikolai Nikolkaevich Bakhmetiev (1772-1831). Neverteless, in June of 2016 the leading expert in Russian civil uniforms, Moscow military historian Sergei A. Popov informed us that the sitter can not be N.N. Bakhmetiev; he wears an uniform of a high-ranking (due to high awards) official of Slobodsko-Ukrainskaya Gubernia (with Kharkov as centre) from the period between 1809-1824. His identity still remains unknown...
Mr. Popov also informed us about existence of a "twin-brother" of this portrait - large-scala oil on canvas portrait in collection of Perm State Picture Gallery ("Male portrait", 67 x 49,5 cm.; Inv.No. Zh-1167, KP-9193).

Provenance: private collection, USA

*Framed measurements will be provided upon request.

We are very grateful to Mr. Popov for his generous help
