This high quality miniature portrait of a young clergyman bears on verso an old authentic inscription with his name: Roberto Papafava. Our Web search returned the following result: an old engraving with portrait of Paduan (Padua is situated 40km west of Venice) patrician, abate (abbot) and scholar Roberto Papafava (see our image nr.8). He is without doubt the same man as "our" sitter! It seems that this priest (he was born in ca. 1617 and died after 1669) was one of Padua's most esteemed citizens: one comes here and there across his name in various sources concerning the history of this city.
This miniature is a work of a 1st-class artist of the 17th-century Venetian School.
