"The Awakening East" or "Turkish Woman" ("Turchanka").
The model for this porcelain figure was the main work of well-listed Soviet female artist of the interwar period (between the I and II World Wars), Elena Yakovlevna Danko (1898-1942; she was the younger sister of the ceramic sculptor Natalya Yakovlevna Danko). The original model was made in 1921; all of its additional casts (produced until 1930s) were painted either by artist herself or by one of her colleagues from the Lomonosov State Porcelain Manufactory (see our images nr.13-16).
We would like to add that these casts that appear at the current antique market achieve very high auction prices (up to US $28,000).
