Friedrich Amerling (1803-1887) "Danish Poet Adam Gottlob Oehlenschlaeger", Oil Painting, 1844
Portrait of the Danish poet Adam Gottlob Oehlenschlaeger (1779-1850; CLICK HERE), painted by Friedrich Amerling in 1844 in Vienna as a first variant of the same portrait, which is now displayed in Museum of Frederiksborg in Copenhagen. This painting belongs to a series of portraits that Amerling made of his friends. He painted each of these portraits twice. The first variant (!) was signed by the sitter (such as our portrait) and remained in Amerling's collection as a rememberance, the second variant was given to the sitter as a gift.
Friedrich von Amerling (1803 Vienna - 1887 ibid.) was an outstanding Austrian portrait painter of the 19th century. In 1816-1823 he studied at the Vienna Academy. In mid 1820s he travelled to London intending to get acquainted with Thomas Lawrence, who was considered the greatest portrait painter of the time. Lawrence allowed the young artist to visit his studio and to continue his education after the master's accomplished works. 11 months later F.von Amerling moved to Paris, where he was friendly received by Horace Vernet. After his return to Vienna he soon became one of the most popular portraitists of the Austrian high society. He worked in Italy in 1831 and 1841-44. Around 1000 portraits created by the artist are known to exist; many of them are now missing. Works of F.von Amerling are displayed in the greatest museums worldwide.
Adam Gottlob Oehlenschlager was born on the 14 of november 1779 in Copenhagen and died there in 1850. With his poetry volume of 1803, he is seen as the founder of romanticism in Denmark.
