Giovanni Agostino Cassana (ca.1665-1720)-Attrib. "Marmot family in nighty landscape", oil on canvas 12500 EUR - 25% DISCOUNT = 9375,00 EUR With a very great possibility (see our comparison images nr.10-18) this painting is a work of well-known, turn of 18th century Italian animalist Giovanni Agostino Cassana. Giovanni Agostino Cassana, called Abate Cassana was born in ca. 1665 in Venice and died in 1720 Genoa. He was a son of the artist Giovanni Francesco Cassana who came from Genua to Venice in the early 1630s. Together with his brothers, Nicolas Cassana and Giovanni Battista Cassana he studied under his father. At some point (date remains unknown) he became a priest. His only dated painting - a fish still life - was made in 1704.There are also six paintings of his mentioned which he sent to Stefano Conti in Lucca in 1706. In 1711 he became a member of guild in Venice. For some time he worked for the Duke of Guastella. Then we find him in Florence at the court of Ferdinando de Medici. In 1718 he moved to Genua where he was active as a portraitist then changed to animalist and still life painting. It is probable that some of his works were made together with his brother Nicolo.
