According to the legend (that we have no reason not to believe) on verso of this work, this miniature portrait acquired in June 2014 through Swiss antique trade, shows Catharina ("Kitty") Bodmer, daughter of Swiss engineer, inventor and captain of artillery, Johann Georg Bodmer and his wife Anna Schultheis. For years Kitty was a close friend of Caroline Schulz, wife of famous German radical-democratic publiicisr Friedrich Wilhelm Schulz (1797-1860; CLICK HERE). When Schulz was in prison, his wife managed to procure him a tool that helped him to escape in the night from 30th to 31st of December 1834. The spouses then fled to Strasbourg. Two years later they settled in Zurich - the city where also Kitty Bodmer lived.
After Caroline fell seriously ill in 1847, she asked her friend Kitty to marry her husband after her death. This marriage took place (shortly after Caroline's death) on the 26th of September of the same (1847) year in London, in the house of Schulz' friend, poet Freligrath.
Unfortunately, the birth and death dates of Catharina "Kitty" Schulz-Bodmer remain uknown.
Signed "Hirnschrot", this miniature is a work of Zurich miniaturist Johann Andreas Hirnschrot. He portrayed Kitty as a still unmarried young woman (according to her hair-style and dress, sometime between 1840 and 1845).
Johann Andreas Hirnschrot (1799 Nuremberg - 1845 Zurich) began his studies at the Academy of Nuremberg in 1816; he exhibited there in 1820. Thereafter he went to Paris and worked for some time as a painter on porcelain at Sèvres porcelain factory. Later he devoted himself to portrait miniatures. In 1828 he went to Switzerland and worked in Geneva, Bern, Aarau and Zurich as a miniaturist on ivory and enamel. After another trip to Germany, he permanently settled in 1831 in Zurich, where he chiefly worked as a painter of stained glass windows.
Miniatures of Johann Andreas Hirnschrot are big rarities at the current antique market.
