This miniature portrait (outstandingly qualitative despite its poor condition) shows a young Russian gentleman in civil dress, decorated with two awards that are indicative of his high position in the state hierarchy and are the neck cross of the Order of St. Anna of the 2nd class and the chest cross of the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th class. This portrait was made (according to sitter's dress and (especially) his hair-style) about 1805.
When we acquired this work from a private US collection, basing our decision on a single (weak) photography, we were unaware of the inscription on verso of this miniature revealing the identity of the depicted gentleman. Upon receipt and opening of the postal parcel we were pleasantly surprised to discover that the miniature's frame is not made of brass as expected, but is a high quality (surely made by a 1st-class St. Petersburg (?) bronzier) original Neoclassical ormolu frame. Moreover, the cover of the frame on verso still bears the old authentic inscription in Cyrillic: Konst.(antin) Vasil.(evich) /Zlobin.
Incidentally, there was only one person by the name Konstantin Vasilevich Zlobin, of the same (visual) age, in possession of the same awards, living in the period about 1805 - son of the extremely wealthy (one of Russia's richest men) manufacturer Vasili Alexeevich Zlobin (see our image nr.25), "Kollezhski sovetnik" (collegial counselor) of Ministry of Justice, assistant and friend of the famous Russian poet and statesman G.R. Derzhavin and a poet himself, Konstantn Vasilevich Zlobin (1779-1813).
In 1805 26-year-old Zlobin lived (and served under Derzhavin) in St. Petersburg - the city that he left in the end of 1805, after retiring from service and subsequently moving to his native town of Volsk in Saratov gubernia. He died in this town in 1813. Our images nr.12-24 offer extensive biographical material about him.
*Fazit: we discovered the only surviving portrait of the Russian poet K.V. Zlobin!!
The miniature demonstrates strong resemblance with works of St. Petersburg miniaturist of the early 19th century, Italian-born artist Pietro de Rossi (called in Russia "Petr Osipovich Rossi").
According to T.A. Selinova - the author of monograph "Petr Rossi /Russian miniaturist", Moscow, 2005 - Pietro (Petr Osipovich) de Rossi's exact date (and place) of birth (Rome? St. Petersburg?) remains unknown.
In any case, he was born sometime between 1761 and 1765. His early portraits produced in the end of the 18th century did not survive. Only Schidlof mentions one of his female portraits in Vienna collection Plankenwarth that bears the signature "Pietro de Rossi 1787". In the early 1800s, the artist counted among his sitters royalties and various other significant persons of St. Petersburg's high society. In 1813, Rossi was appointed member of the Imperial Academy with focus on miniature painting. Many of his works were reproduced by engravers and lithographers of his period. He died of cholera in 1831 in St. Petersburg.
