Painted in the 1st quarter of the 19th century, it is a portrait of a relatively young high-ranking officer (general?) bearing (among other awards) the blue sash of Russian Order of St. Andrew the First-Called. However, his uniform is not Russian, for his epaulettes with horseshoe metallic cover plates indicate his Prussian origin.
The list of St. Andrew Order's recipients in the period of the early 19th century refers to a group of several relatively young Prussians, all - members of the Prussian Royal Family. By comparing the early portraits of each of them, we have arrived at the consideration that only one of them - Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (1783-1851; CLICK HERE; see also our image nr.6 for an early portrait of his) could be truly taken into account.
This consideration lead us then to the final conclusion that both miniatures - this miniature and its counter-piece, which was purchased together in one lot at the inventory sale of a highly aristocratic castle in Germany (the possible portrait of young Nikolai Pavlovich of Russia; (see our web # 38507) - were made by the same Berlin court artist during the Russian Duke's one of two (pre-wedding) trips to Berlin. It is known that he first visited Berlin in 1815, in order to make acquaintance with his future wife, Princess Charlotte of Prussia. He went there again in the early 1817, shortly before their wedding that was to take place in St. Petersburg on the 13th of July of the same (1817) year.

This miniature could with great likelihood be a work of well-known Berlin miniaturist (who in the described period frequently portrayed members of the Prussian Royal Family) Christian Tangermann (see our comparison image nr.7).

Christian Tangermann was born ca. 1760 in Westphalia and died in 1830 in Berlin. He was a painter of portraits in oils and pastel and, especially, a miniaturist. He worked in Berlin for many years, painting numerous miniatures of the court. About 1807 Tangermann travelled to St. Petersburg, where he remained until 1809. About 1812 he sojourned in Vienna.
Schidlof says further: "...Tangermann painted in the style of certain pupils of Isabey (sic!), but his work is dry. His drawing is good, the execution fine and conscientious...". The influence of Isabey in Tangermann's work is rather obvious from our last additional image that shows the same (!) portrait, yet clearly painted a few years prior and by Isabey himself!
