Louis-Henri de Fontenay was born in 1800 in Amsterdam into a French family. He studied at the Tekenschool van de Mij tot Nut van 't Algemeen under Louis Marie Autissiter and Jacob Smits. In 1822 he settled in Den Hague - then capital of the Netherlands - and between 1822 and 1827 worked there as a court artist. In 1828 he returned to Amsterdam. From 1850 de Fontenay lived in Paris, where he exhibited his miniatures at the Salon in 1850 and 1852. Works of this artist can be viewed in Museum of Amsterdam and other esteemed museum and private collections.
