Friedrich Otto Georgi was born in Leipzig in 1819. Already early in his life he was instructed by his father, the painter Friedrich Trautgott Georgi, in painting. As a 15-year-old he exhibited for the first time two watercolors in Dresden. He studied further at the Dresdener Art Academy and dedicated himself to landscape painting until the year 1841. As a substitute for Johann Jacob Frey who had fallen ill on the journey and had to brake off, Georgi received the comission in 1843 to take part in an expedition to Egypt and Nubia as a drawing artist. The expedition was lead by Richard Lepsius and for Georgi this travel to the Orient became foreordaining to his style of painting. He made numerous studies during the trip which enabled him to later create his admired and desired orientalist paintings. From the year 1846 after his return from Egypt, Georgi took multiple times part in exhibitions of the Berlin Academy. He spent the years 1853-55 in Rome and then lived close to Meissen. Already from the year 1854, he regularly took part with his orientalist works in the yearly Dresdener Art Exhibition. In 1858 Georgi moved to Dresden to live there until his death in 1874 as he was 55 years old. His painting "The Mount of Olives and Moriah near Jerusalem" was acquired to the Royal Art Collection of Dresden in 1869. He was famous in the city of Dresden as "Orient-Georgi".
