Daniel Ferdinand Caffe-Attrib. "Portrait of a little girl", fine pastel, ca. 1820
It is very likely that this high quality pastel portrait of a 1-2-year-old girl (see her necklace!) is a work of well-known Leipzig artist, who was specializing in pastel portraits, Daniel Ferdinand Caffe.
Daniel Ferdinand Caffe was born in 1793 in Leipzig son of one of the most known German pastelists Daniel Caffe the Elder. After the death of his father he took on latter's clients and was regurarly mentioned in Leipzig until 1833. Daniel Ferdinand took part in the Dresden Art Exhibition of 1820 (with two pastel portraits). In 1833 he left Leipzig for ever and went to Italy, probably in the same year. In 1837 he exhibited in Rome two genre paintings with carneval scenes.
