We are 100% certain that this charcoal drawing is an absolutely authentic work of well-known Berlin artist Carl Friedrich Koepke (for example, see our web # 30594).
This charming portrait of a young lady playing piano, with a with cityscape (seen through a window) in her background, shows a very strong influence of works by another renowned artist, who was working in the same period - Professor of Berlin Academy, Franz Krueger.
And indeed: the author, Carl Friedrich Koepke, lived in 1820/40s in Berlin, where he studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts (sic!). Between 1820 and 1846 he regularly showed his portraits in oil, watercolor, charcoal and miniature portraits on ivory at Berlin Academical Exhibitions. At the Academical Exhibition of 1834 he presented his miniature portraits of King Friedrich Wilhelm III, Crown Princess and State Minister von Raumer. Similarly, at the Academical Exhibition of 1846 he showed his watercolor portrait of Queen Elisabeth of Prussia.
Besides this information from standard reference books, we were able to find further interesting details: the artist was married to the certain Caroline Magnus, who, as we believe, was the sister of Koepke's town-fellow and colleague (friend?), Berlin portrait painter Eduard Magnus (1799-1872). The couple had two children: the elder daughter Marie was born in 1827; the second, son Carl Adolph - in 1833.
