This work belongs to a group of several Russian miniatures (formerly in the property of heirs of an old Russian émigré family), which resurfaced at the auction sale of English auction house "Cotswold Auction Company" in Cheltenham, which took place on the 4th of June 2013. We acquired four miniatures from this group, one of which is discussed there miniature on ivory showing an unknown young "ober-officer" (junior officer) of the Russian Navy. The type of uniform he is shown wearing was introduced in 1801, immediately following the accession to the throne of Emperor Alexander I (see our image nr.9).

For other Russian miniatures acquired at the same sale, see our web # 37079, web # 37090 and web # 37109. As we said in accompanying text to web # 37109 there is a family connection between all miniatures of mentioned group - they present obviously members of Chertkov and Stroganov families and connected with them (through marriage?) other persons. Image nr.16 of web # 37109 provides genealogical information about Praskovia Dmitrievna Chertkova, who was first-born child of depicted E. S. Chertkova and (as we belive) twin-sister of A. D. Chertkov (b. 1789). Genealogical reference says she changed later her surname to Khrushchova (surely through marriage!). This information, as we suppose, is a key to identity of our young naval officer.
Among officers of Russian Navy in the discussed period there were only two persons bearing surname Khrushchov: Stepan Petrovich Khrushchov (1791-1865; future famous admiral - CLICK HERE) and his elder brother Yakov Petrovich Khrushchov (1790-1809; in age of 19 years, being lieutenant of Navy he died in ship-wreck at the coast of Finnland). One of these both brothers could be husband (fiance?) of Praskovia Dmitrievna Chertkova from web # 37109...
