This portrait was painted by Berlin miniaturist L.W. Schlieter in 1819, two years after the sitter was awarded Russian military order of St. George of the 4th class (the award conferral took place on January 23rd 1817; see our image nr.10) and three years after he was appointed commander of Prussian 2nd "Schützen-Bataillon" (riflemen-battalion; note the number "2" on his epaulette).
It is a unique miniature portrait of then young Prussian Major Heinrich von Holleben (1790-1864), who in this time was already known through his heroism during the Liberation (anti-Napoleonic) War of 1813/14 (for his biographical materials, see our images nr.9). In 1839 he became major-general and brigade commander; in 1848 - division commander; in 1849 - general of infantry.
He was especially known for the innovation of the "company column", a formation where closed infantry divisions can survive the rifle fire of the enemy with as less as possible loss of soldiers. He was the first to implement this practice in combat by Vitry-le-Francois (spring of 1814). He was also the author of the epochal work (published anonymously in 1838) "Militärische Betrachtungen aus den Erfahrungen eines preussischen Offiziers".
In this portrait, besides the aforementioned breast cross of the Russian order of St. George of the 4th class, he bears the neck cross of Prussian "Pour Le Merite" (awarded in 1815; see our image nr.11), cross (in his lapel) and breast star of Prussian "Iron Cross" of the 1st class (awarded in 1813; see our image nr.12), as well as chest cross of Russian order of St. Vladimir of the 4th class (awarded in…?).
The author of this miniature, artist Ludwig W. Schlieter (active in Berlin in early 19th century), exhibited (according to Schidlof) at the Academy of Berlin in 1814. Thieme-Becker mentions a miniature by him with portrait of F. W. Krause. The latter was shown at the Berlin Exhibition of 1906.
