Acquired on German Ebay, this miniature of unknown Russian Lieutenant-General (three stars on his epaulettes correspond to the rank of a Lieutenant-General; this kind of rank distinctions was introduced in Russia in 1827) with neck cross of Oldenburg (Duchy Oldenburg) House Order of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig, turned out to be possibly today's only existing portrait of Russo-Baltic aristocrat in Russian military service, Friedrich Gustav (in Russia - Fedor Fedorovich) von Oldenburg.
Among all listed Russian Lieutenant-Generals from the period of 1830/50s only one person shared a connection to the House of Oldenburg, namely aforementioned Friedrich Gustav von Oldenburg.
He was born on the 31st of January 1791 as a son of Russian Major, Livonian (Estonian) nobleman and relative of German Dukes of Oldenburg, Friedrich Ernst von Oldenburg and the latter's wife, Maria Elisabeth, nee Tiedemann.
As a pioneer officer, he entered Russian military service (already under the name of Fedor Fedorovich von Oldenburg) in 1809; in 1821 he was promoted to colonel; in 1829 - to Major-General and, in 1843 - to Lieutenant-General (thus, 1843 is the lowest timeframe of this portrait's execution date). From 1846 to 1854 he was a military commandant of Brest-Litovsk (town on the Belorussian-Polish border).
Fedor Fedorovich von Oldenburg participated in foreign campaigns of 1813-1814 (anti-Napoleonic War on the territories of Poland, Germany and France; took part in Russo-Turkish War of 1824-1828, as well as contributed to the suppression of the Polish Revolt (1831).
His Russian military biographer mentions his Russian order of St. George of the 4th class (he obtained it already in 1828), which we unfortunately unable to see in this portrait.
Probably this miniature was made by a German or Estonian artist during the general's visit to his relatives in Livonia (Estonia).
