Jacob Placidus Altmutter-Attrib. "French Invasion into Tyrol", rare painting!!, early 19th century
Here, late at night in a Tyrolean (note typical for this region architecture of the peasant houses) village, we witness an improvised parade: a column of the French Republican (uniforms corresponding to the regulation of the late 1790s) infantry is marching through the village before a group of commanders headed by a general on a white stallion. One could well imagine that he is Napoleon Bonaparte, chief-commander of (then in combat in Italy) the French Army himself, had it not been for one nuance: it is known that Napoleon paid a visit to Tyrol only once. Namely, on September 5th 1796 he came to Trient (South Tyrol) but left this region already in a few days (see our image nr.12); he never visited Tyrol in winter.
Jacob Placidus (also Plazidus) Altmutter (1780 Innsbruck - 1819 Schwaz (he drowned in the river Inn)) received his first art lessons from his father, church painter Franz Altmutter. In 1801/03 he studied under Francesco Casanova at Vienna Academy. An illness forced him to return to Innsbruck, where he rejoined his father assisting the latter in wall painting projects for churches. In 1809, brought into disrepute through his involvement in Tyrol Rebellion, Altmutter had to flee from the advancing French first to Klagenfurt and then to Vienna. In 1811 he returned to his father.
