A.-S. Garnerey and Mlle A. Leclerc, original portrait and its contemporary copy, two superb miniatures
Auguste Simon Garnerey (Garneray) was a very well-known French painter and miniaturist of the turn of the 19th century. Pupil of his own father and J.B.Isabey, he began exhibiting his portraits, interiors and vignettes for contemporary novels in 1808 at the Salon de Paris. Having a very good reputation at the royal court, he was the royal painter of Queen Hortense and Duchess Berry. He worked also on commission to the Empresses Josefine and Marie Louise. In 1819 Garnerey was appointed costume designer of l'Opéra de Paris, l'Académie Royale, and Théâtre Italien in Paris. He was also active in this function at the Théâtre Francais and Théâtre l'Odeon.
Mlle Leclerc (according to recent research of Lemoine-Bouchard; see our image nr.22) was a French female artist, who until today is known through only one of her miniatures from a private collection that is showing a blond gentleman. This miniature is signed and dated "Mlle A. Leclerc 1820".
