Acquired on September 20th 2011 at Christie's Paris (Inventory Sale of Abbatial Palais of Royaumont Abbey, situated 30km north of Paris), these two watercolors with Austrian military scenes were painted by the same hand and (though unsigned) are absolutely authentic and very typical works of Viennese artist of the 1st third of 19th century, Johann Nepomuk Hoechle.
Moreover, we found two lithographs which were made after both watercolors by Vienna lithographer Josef Kriehuber by pointing out that the author of watercolors is Johann Nepomuk Hoechle! Iin their turn these lithographs were made for published in 1830s by Viennese art edition "Joseph Trentsensky" album "Darstellung der k.k. österreichischen Armee mit allen Chargen" (see our images nr.25-27)

The first scene, called "Sanitätswagen" shows Austrian ambulance convoy (with ill soldiers accompanied by military doctor (mounted officer in blue uniform)) on the road to Milan (then belonging to Austro-Hungarian Empire).
The second scene shows a parade of trumpeters of Austrian Uhlan Regiment No. 4 ("Kaiser Franz") galloping in front of a group of generals (probably headed by Kaiser (Emperor) Franz I).

Johann Nepomuk Hoechle was a very well-known Austrian historical painter and graphic artist who was active in the beginning of the 19th century. He was born in 1790 in Munich and commenced his studies at the Vienna Academy at the age of 14 (!). He was studying under Fueger, Wutky and Ignace Duvivier. The artist soon became a much known battle painter owing his success to great events of his time - the Napolenic era. In 1809, in the night preceding the battle of Aspern, while drawing a sketch on the hill close to Vienna, Hoechle was captured by the French. He was sentenced to execution by a firing squad as a spy, but his great wit saved him.
The sketch he was drawing is now housed in the Albertina Museum in Vienna. After furthering his studies of military painting, Hoechle experienced the world history endeavors while in suite of Kaiser Franz I. During this time Hoechle created numerous accurate sketches after nature. In 1819 he came to Italy (Rome, Naples) in entourage of the Kaiser.

Provenance: Collection Fould-Springer, Abbatial Palais of Royaumont Abbey by Paris.
The only daughter and heiress of very wealthy Austrian (sic!) industrialist Baron Gustav von Springer, Marie Caecilie Baroness von Springer (1886 Paris - 1979 Paris) married in 1905 in Vienna French banker (member of European banking house "Fould Oppenheim" and grandson of Napoleon III' Finance Minister Achille Fould) Eugene Fould. The latter thus through marriage obtained the title of baron and was from that point on called Baron de Fould-Springer.
In 1926 the couple acquired Abbatial Palais of Royaumont, where they proceeded to house and display their numerous paintings and objects of art (some of them were brought by them from Vienna!).
In 1929 Baron Eugene de Fould-Springer died. Four years later his widow married Frank Wooster. They lived by turns in Royaument and Vienna. In 1938, after the annexation of Austria by the Nazi Germany they left Vienna indefinitely and travelled via France to Canada, where they then spent all the following war years. After the WWII was over, Marie Caecilie (by then widowed for the second time) spent the remaining part of her life in Florence. The Abbatial Palais was occupied by the family of her daughter Liliane.

The whole inventory of the Abbatial Palais of Royaumont was auctioned off at Sotheby's Paris on 19-21 September 2011. These two watercolors are a part of it.
