Guillaume Descamps "Jeanne, Comtesse Cornudet des Chaumettes", Ink Drawing, 1813
Price: 1800 EUR
(please note additional Austrian VAT (Value Added Tax) applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)
This portrait will be sold only together in the following group of items.
This, of highest quality, made in 1813 portrait drawing was acquired as a part of a 6-pieces-lot (together with five other by the same hand - see our images nr.7-9) at the inventory sale of Chateau des Cornudet a Crocq, in the surroundings of Aubusson, region Limousin, central France. Comte Cornudet des Chaumettes and his cousin, Comte Mathieu de la Redorte are today's owners of the chateau (both families became related through a marriage of Valentine Mathieu de la Redorte (1834-1889) and the grandson of Joseph, Comte Cornudet des Chaumettes (in 1813 it was his who owned the chateau) in 1854).
The sale on 27 June 2012 was conducted by Paris auction house "Cornette de Saint Cyr" which called it rather anonimous (on request of the owners of the collection!) - "Ancienne collection du Comte Mathieu de la Redorte et du Comte Cornudet des Choummetes (correct: Chaumettes - B.W.) /provenant d'un chateau de la region d'Aubusson…" (as we see without mentioning the name of the chateau).
The here discussed piece is a portrait of a middle-aged lady with a bonnet, whose identity provides the inscription on verso of the original back-cover: Comtesse Joseph Cornudet /nee avant 1789 /Cellier de Montel (our image nr.9 shows obverse (in previously framed condition) and reverse with mentioned inscription).
The drawing is monogrammed and dated - "D/1813" - which means we are dealing here with an original work of the well-known Paris artist Guillaume-Désire-Joseph Descamps, who then just came back to the French capital after a few years of stay at the court of Joachim Murat in Naples; from the same collection (but in another sale) we acquired an oil portrait by the same hand, which was made in the same days and is fully signed and dated - "Descamps /1813" - see our web # 36505. Moreover, in the sale of 27 June 2012 at "Cornette de Saint Cyr" were offered two other items, connected with this portrait drawing: a) oil portrait, for which this drawing served as a preparatory study (see our image nr.10); this portrait was offered, like our drawing, as one of an unknown lady; obviously, the auction house experts have not noticed the mentioned inscription with the sitter's name on verso; they wrongly described also the other five portrait drawings of the 6-pieces-lot (see our image nr.8) and b) the painted ten years before portrait of the same lady by the famous Napoleonic portraitist Robert Lefèvre (see image nr. 11).
Jeanne, Baronesse Cellier du Montel was born on 13 October 1768 in Ardes, department Puy-de-Dôme, region Auvergne, France as daughter of a nobleman François Cellier du Montel, captain of the Regiment "Royal-La-Marine". With her husband Joseph, Comte Cornudet des Chaumettes (the wedding took place in 1787) she had five children; one of them, Etienne-Emile (1795-1870) became the well-known politician and peer of France. In the same 6-pieces-lot we acquired a child portrait of his future wife, then 14-year-old Eglé-Eugenie Vanlerberghe (see our web # 36509.
Comtesse Jeanne Cornudet died in 1834. On our portrait she is 45 years old…
Guillaume-Désire-Joseph Descamps was born in 1779 in Lille and died in 1858 in Paris. He was a pupil of François-André Vincent. In 1802, he won the 2nd Rome-Prize for his painting "Sabinus et Eponine devant Vespasien". Through involvement of Jean-Baptiste Wicar, in 1808, he became a "Peintre officiale du Roi de Naples, Joachim Murat" (in that period, he painted Murat's portrait, as well as some subjects from events of those times: among others, "La roi Joachim Murat distribuant des récompenses aux blessés a bord de la frigate "La Céres", après le combat de 27 juin 1809" (formerly in Palazzo de Potrici in Naples; it was also engraved by Descamps himself)). He regularly exhibited at the Salon de Paris portraits, historical and religious scenes (a.o. paintings intended for churches - St. Estauche (1819) in Paris, St. André (1822) and Chapel of Hospital in Lille.
Works of Descamps can be viewed today in Versailles, Chateau Malmaison, Museum of Fine Arts in Lille, etc.
