French two-sided silver locket with superior quality silhouette portraits of an aristocratic married couple. The husband wears a military officer's uniform and bears the Cross of the French Royal St. Louis Order. Both miniatures are inserted into original enamel matting and are painted (in églomisé technique) on milk glass.
The husband's name was Antoine, comte (Count) de Reinach Hirtzbach; he was Alsatian nobleman and to the time of miniature's creation served in the rank of captain in the "Royal-Allemand"-Regiment of the French Army. His en face portrait (in oils; see our image nr.10) is to see on the cover of published in 2000 book - Marc Glotz "Antoine de Reinach Hirtzbach (1741-1815) /de l'Ancien Regime a l'ordre nouveau", Altkirch 2000.
Images nr.11-13 show another known portraits of his.
During the French Revolution Antoine de Reinach (beeing already "marechal de camp"(lowest rank of a general)) remained in France (unlike thousands of French noblemen who became emmigrants). He came back to his native chateau Hitzbach by Altkirch in Alsace and lived there as an ordinary citizen ("citoyen Reinach")...
Twelve years before, in 1780 he married Marie-Louise Baroness de Mohr de Wald d'Autel )1761-1790) from Luxembourg (see images nr.14-15). We are sure the miniature was created shortly thereafter by 1st-class (unfortunately still anonimous) French (Parisian?) artist.
