Portrait of a young Austrian 2nd lieutenant (one star on collar).
Franz Pitner was a renowned Austrian portrait and genre painter of the second half of the 19th century. He studied in Vienna and Rome, where he stayed during 1853-1854. He was also active in Venice. He died in 1892 in Bolzano, South Tyrol, then - part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now Italy.
