Johann Wilhelm Baur (1607-1642)-Follower "Palazzo at Harbor", fine miniature on ivory, 18th century
This work was painted in the 18th century by (Austrian?) artist strongly influenced by works of the 17th-century painter and miniaturist (sic!) Johann Wilhelm Baur.
Johann Wilhelm Baur (1607 Strasburg - 1642 Vienna) studied under the best Strasburg miniaturist of that time, Friedrich Brentel. In 1631, he went to Naples and, in 1633, was invited to Rome, where he became active as an etcher. In 1637, Baur settled in Vienna. He specialized in small watercolors of architectural follies in perspective and, for this reason, was often engaged to make pictures of gardens. In 1642 he died in Vienna of a sudden illness while on commission by Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor.
