Janos Donat (1744-1830) "Portrait of an aristocratic lady", important oil on canvas!!, 1806
Portrait of a young lady in sand-coloured dress and embroidered red stole leaning on a rock in landscape - a wonderful painting by one of the best Austro-Hungarian portraitists of the turn of 19th century, Janos (Johann Daniel) Donat (1744 Monastery Neuzelle / Niederlausitz - 1830 Pest/Budapest).
The artist was born in 1744 in the monastery of Neuzelle a.d. Oder in Germany. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Martin van Meytens, Franz Edmund Weirotter and Caspar Franz Sambach, and soon became a very popular portraitist of the Viennese high society, having painted a few portraits of Empress Maria Theresia and Emperor Josef II. Already in his Viennese period he used to worked for a large Hungarian clientele. Lead by various commissions he established himself in Pest in 1810. He remained loyal to the Classical Viennese portrait style. His works can be seen in the National Museum Budapest and in museums of Vienna, Brastislava, Zagreb...
Our additional images show two other paintings of Donat from the same period.
