This portrait of 19-years-old Marie Amalie, Princess of Baden (1834-1899) is an mportant work of the famous Viennese miniaturist Emanuel Thomas Peter. Another two artist's own replicas of this miniature (one dated 1853) were sold by Sotheby's in 1995 (sale in New Castle, Baden-Baden: "Collection of Markgraves and Grand Dukes of Baden" (see our image nr.9)). and in 1988, by Christie's Geneva (see our image nr.10).
The sitter of this miniature was born on October 11, 1818 as Princess Marie Amelie Elisabeth Karoline, daughter of the Grand Duke Karl Ludwig Friedrich von Baden and of his wife Stephanie de Beauharnais (the adopted daughter of Napoleon Bonaparte). Marie was also on her mother's side a cousin of the future King Napoleon III of France. She married William Alexander Anthony Archibald Hamilton, future 11th Duke of Hamilton on 23 February 1843 at the Ducal Palace, Mannheim, Germany and became Duchess of Hamilton (upon her father-in-law's death in 1852). She converted to Roman Catholicism in 1855. Her husband, Duke William, died in 1863 at the age of 52 after falling down (drunk!) from the stairs of the Maison Doree on the Boulevard des Italiens in Paris.
With her husband Duchess Marie had three children.
Emanuel Thomas Peter (1799 Jaegerndorf - 1873 Vienna) was a very well-known Austrian portrait miniaturist of the 19th century. From 1818 he studied at the Vienna Academy, at first architecture and then miniature painting under the famous Moritz Michael Daffinger. He copied a lot of Daffinger's miniatures with such artistic skill, that it is often impossible to distinguish between copies and originals. After a stay in Silezia Peter returned to Vienna in 1830 and became there one of the leading miniaturists. His best works were created between 1830 and 1850s.
The signature: Peter cop., lets us suppose, that this miniature and of course the Sotheby's replica, are Peter's copies after an original of Daffinger.
